Language Arts (English)
At Repton Schoolhouse, the children are immersed in an environment rich in language and literature. Our overarching aim is to instil in each child a love of literature and effective, expressive communication skills. With a proud heritage, Repton has produced alumni such as Roald Dahl and Christopher Isherwood reflecting our belief in the power of language. The children are given the best possible opportunities to become confident communicators.
The Daily 5
At Repton Schoolhouse, we implement the Daily 5, a framework for structuring literacy time so students develop lifelong habits of reading, writing, and working independently. The children participate daily in the following activities; Read to Self, Work on Writing, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, and Word Work (Phonics).
Through the multifaceted approach of the Daily 5 and supported by the Jolly Phonics programme, Repton Schoolhouse children are guided not only to be proficient readers but also to develop a love of reading and literature. This is supported by an extensive school Library and class libraries with carefully selected, quality children’s literature to stimulate imagination as well as to understand the world.
Learning how to write effectively is one of the most important life-long skills. Through their experiences of reading, developing phonological knowledge and grammar during the Daily 5, the children develop an innate desire to communicate effectively. Teachers track, monitor and support the children through daily Writing Conferences with each child.
Spelling, Grammar and Phonics
Jolly Phonics is a fun and child centred approach to teaching literacy through synthetic phonics. With actions for each of the 42 letter sounds, the multi-sensory method is very motivating for children, parents and teachers, who can see the children achieve and master phonics, spelling and grammar.
Speaking and Listening
Children learn from their environment and at Repton Schoolhouse they hear quality spoken language. Interacting with the people around them provides real and meaningful contexts to use language and the we provide a wide range of experiences to stimulate language development. Vocabulary and syntax are important components of our programmes.
Language Arts (Chinese)
The early years are a critical period for children’s language development. At Repton Schoolhouse, we recognise the importance of introducing an additional language to the children because, as indicated by research, the children who learn more than one language show improved executive functioning of the brain, and that they are better at discriminating between different sounds of various languages.
The Chinese programme at Repton Schoolhouse aims to develop the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills of our children, with more emphasis given to the latter two skills as the children progress into Kindergarten 2. The children will have the opportunity to practise their communication skills throughout the day with Chinese Teachers and Chinese speaking Teaching Partners. The children will have daily Chinese lessons based on themes closely related to their daily life.
Our unique Chinese curriculum is designed with age-appropriate activities in mind to engage the children as well as to meet the requirements of the Primary One curriculum. Through stories, nursery rhymes, songs, games, music and movement, art and craft and experiential learning opportunities, we hope to instill life-long positivity and passion for learning more about the Chinese language and culture.
