Creativity and Culture – Self Expression, Creativity and the Arts

Repton Schoolhouse teachers strive to instil in the children a love and pursuit of beauty as found in art and music and movement. They create opportunities for the creative expression of emotions and ideas through Art, Music and Creative movement. Art and music and movement foster the development of the whole child, including the cognitive, physical, social-emotional and creative domains. As children listen and respond through creative expression and movement, they are motivated to communicate ideas from their imagination, thoughts and feelings. Repton Schoolhouse children are provided with many opportunities to be engaged in the Arts.

Stages of Development in Art

Repton Schoolhouse teachers design and sequence Art learning experiences to support growth in complexity, building on the children’s earlier experiences and skills acquired. They are given opportunities to enjoy exploring and experimenting with art materials and tools, become sensitive to the visual environment and to art works and express their personal views of the world around them.

Elements of Art

Repton Schoolhouse teachers understand the elements of Art. They facilitate art experiences that help the children develop an understanding of the art vocabulary they need in order to respond to or interpret the visual world around them. Experiences in art introduce the children to the basic elements of art: line, colour, shape, texture, form, space and value.

Elements of Music

At Repton Schoolhouse, the children’s understanding of music will develop with accumulated experiences and exposure to the basic elements. The basic elements of music that teachers integrate into children’s learning experiences include: rhythm, tempo, pitch, dynamics, timbre, texture and form.

Exploring and Using Media and materials

Repton Schoolhouse children sing songs, make music and dance, and experiment with ways of changing them. They safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function.

Being Imaginative

Repton Schoolhouse children use what they have learnt about media and materials in original ways, thinking about uses and purposes. They represent their own ideas, thoughts and feelings through design and technology, art, music, dance, role-play and stories.
